Second week of the SoCal Independent Lacrosse League

It was a fun-filled day of lacrosse for the Southern California Independent Lacrosse League yesterday at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. The day kicked off early with a box lacrosse stye 5 v 5 U11 half-field game with coaches playing on both teams to help facilitate ball movement and transition, and to “on-field” coach. The boys had fun and were gassed by the end of the game. More importantly, from a coaching perspective, this game provided invaluable teaching lessons as the coaches were on the field coaching and playing with the U11’s, actually telling them where to move on offensive, how to slide on defense, and showing them why we quickly move the ball up field in transition.
The highlight of the day was the U15 mixed coaches and players 7 v 7 game. Current and former Leverage coaches came back to play in this controlled and extremely fun 7 v 7 scrimmage. The Leverage coaches have played a wide range of college lacrosse from MCLA to D3 and D1. The Leverage LA and OC U15’s were exposed to the pace of play, ball movement and most importantly all the talk on offense and defense. This light-hearted game was a wonderful bonding experience for the Leverage Lacrosse family of coaches, players and parents. In the end, coach Nate Tucker’s (formerly “up state Nate” but now newly branded “golden state Nate”) team narrowly edged out the always player-favorite coach Joe Marinelli’s squad buy one goal. After the game coach Tucker said, “I believe it was my off-season personnel decisions as the general manager, along with some in-game adjustments that won this game for us” 🙂
In High School action, our friends from the Valley and West LA came down to play the Leverage OC and LA teams. These games were very competitive. The longer game format (17-minute running quarters) gave all the players plenty of playing time and allowed for the coaches to actually coach in-game situations. This allows for teams to grow as a unit and become “read and react, situational lacrosse players” in a team concept system.
In the upcoming weeks the Leverage teams (U11 through HS) look forward to hosting our friends from the OC! Happy 4th everyone!
