Meet Coach Borgia:

Coach Borgia grew up in New Rochelle, NY, son of Sid Borgia, the top NBA referee from 1945 to 1965.

He first played lacrosse at Rutgers in 1973 at the urging of his friend John Danowski, currently the head coach at Duke. Danowski was the quarterback of the freshman football team and convinced Borgia to try out a new sport.

Borgia started coaching lacrosse in 2007 when Redondo Union started their lacrosse programs for boys and girls. He was the asst coach for boys program while his son Matt played in 2007 & 2008.

In 2009, he became coach of the girl’s team at Redondo. He switched to girls because they had had 3 coaches in 2007 and 2008 and had a record of 4-17 in those first 2 years.

“I saw the desire and focus the girls had while practicing without a coach for most of 2008 and I thought they deserved an opportunity to have a full time coach to work with them on a daily basis and get them organized and focused.”

In his 7 years as girl’s coach at RUHS, Redondo has won 7 straight Bay League Championships, which is a school record at Redondo. Redondo was undefeated in Bay League in 4 of those seasons, including 2014 and 2015.

Coach Borgia led Redondo to 3 CIF North Championships, in 2010, 2011 and 2015. Redondo lost to #1 Foothill in the last 20 seconds of the game in 2015 by the score 11-10. That score is the closest a team from Los Angeles County has ever come to beating an Orange County champion.

Coach Borgia’s career record while at Redondo is 110-19, with 12 of those losses to top 10 teams. In the Bay League, Redondo is 69-5 in Borgia’s 7 years.

Coach Borgia has been working to grow girls lacrosse in the Redondo area and his middle school program has gone from 19 players in 2013 to 58 players in 2015.
